The children at P.S 45 get a chance twice a week to read either a selected book of the week or one of their choices. As a group they discuss some main ideas, key concepts found in the stories and making predictions. K-5 will also have the opportunity to write and publish their own personal short stories and comic books.
With a focus on enhancing literacy skills, the children grades K-5 will research different styles of artwork. This will include reading and reciting poetry from different artist, reading and comprehension thru music lyrics and interpretive dance.
Combining the Move To Improve curriculum created by the DOE the staff will reinforce fun physical activity with as little to no equipment possible. The focus will be on to get the kids moving for at least 30 minutes a day in any size space available while still having fun.
The P.S 45 graduating 5th grade will meet with the kindergarten once a week to read to children one on one to help encourage an interest in books. The group will all read different books that they have chosen together as a team and than have a group discussion where the kindergarten can work through story comprehension.
Mastering the Masters
On a monthly basis our art teacher will introduce a new artist to us. The children will spend some time learning about the artist and their style or work; than they will recreate their own versions of the work. The session will include such work from Andy Warhol, Picasso, Van gogh and Basquiat.
Through hands on science experiments the children will recreate technological anomalies, rebuild architectural structures and go over how math is a key reinforcement in the physical work.
Grades K- 3rd will get a full period once a week of reflective math work. The groups will review the math work being taught in day school and following the common core standards will work through math problems together as a group.
