The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), funded by the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD), is a six-week job program. This program is unique in that it utilizes a lottery-based system to accept applicants in order to serve a broad population of youth with varying backgrounds, experiences, circumstances and skill sets. This system allows our youth to get entry-level job experience that is crucial for gaining leverage in the workforce. Many desirable job positions require prior experience, so without employment programs like SYEP, youth struggle to experience the workplace, earn a paycheck and advance toward adulthood.
A young person’s first paid job can be a crucial developmental experience, ideally providing a safe and supported entry into the world of work as well as significant insight into one’s strengths, weaknesses, interests and ambitions. Since 1963, SYEP has connected generations of New Yorkers to that first job to serve as a pipeline for the future workforce of NYC.
